GAO says HHS needs to close cyber vulnerabilities

A new Government Accountability Office report calls on the health department to close security gaps and better track the technology it already uses to understand its future needs.

The GAO has identified 82 open recommendations that the Department of Health and Human Services and its chief information officer, Clark Minor, should address to reduce cyber security vulnerabilities and opportunities for fraud, waste, and abuse.

Roger Cressey, who served as a senior cyber security official during the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations, said the number of recommendations is significant, and if they’re ignored, the department could be vulnerable to cyber-attacks.
