Former intelligence analyst is named NSA deputy director

The Trump administration named Joseph Francescon, a former intelligence analyst, as the next deputy director of the National Security Agency on Thursday.

Francescon, who worked for 10 years as an NSA intelligence analyst and later as a counterterrorism aide at the White House, willreplace Wendy Noble, who was fired in April along with the NSA director, Gen. Timothy Haugh, setting off a furor among lawmakers and colleagues who saw the moves as political.

Haugh and Noble were removed after a far-right activist, Laura Loomer, complained to President Donald Trump that they were disloyal. Critics say there was no justification for the firings, which have rattled the workforce at a time of growing threats from foreign and cyber adversaries.
