Inspector General flags security gap in NIH genomics project
The National Institutes of Health launched its “All of Us” initiative a decade ago to transform disease prevention and medical treatment so that it is more personalized for patients based on their genes, environment, lifestyle and other considerations.
The program involves collecting sensitive health and genomics data from Americans for research, but a government watchdog group found that weak security controls could expose 1 million people to risk of access or data theft by bad actors, including foreign adversaries.
The NIH has taken action to implement five recommendations to address the security weaknesses identified in an audit conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General.
