Creepy camera hacks expose IoT security risks in healthcare
Internet of things devices – especially cameras – can help improve patient monitoring in healthcare settings. But under the control of malicious insiders or hackers, these connected IoT devices can pose highly invasive and potentially criminal privacy violations involving healthcare co-workers and patients, warn regulatory attorney Rachel Rose and security researcher Yan Long.
In fact, several recent cases spotlight the critical concerns but they could be just the tip of the iceberg of creepy intrusions that can happen in healthcare settings, they said in a video panel discussion with Information Security Media Group.
In one recent case, a hospital pharmacist allegedly spied on dozens of colleagues in their homes and in the workplace for over a decade. In a separate incident, a sleep clinic worker allegedly installed secret cameras disguised as smoke detectors in restrooms to record videos of staff and patients.
