A 12-month assessment of more than 1,000 maritime industry suppliers found that 28% carried high or very high cyber risk, according to new data from Achilles, a Scandinavian company that monitors supply-chain risks, and Procureship, an Athens-based platform for marine buyers and suppliers.

The review process was intended to identify potential risks for shipping companies across environment, social, governance and cyber domains, the companies said in a press release.

More than half of the global suppliers reviewed were found to lack third party-assured anti-bribery systems, public liability insurance or information security policies.

Procureship CEO and founder Grigoris Lamprou said that “understanding the ESG capabilities of suppliers across the maritime industry is crucial to safeguard the day-to-day operations of global shipowners and reinforce their own ESG strategies.”

Achilles CEO Craig Rodgerson noted that “shipping companies are increasingly using data-driven insights to target greater supplier relations and address their own environmental and cyber vulnerabilities.”
