An employee with the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has been placed on leave for allegedly leaking personal information via a breach of data on over 100 former and one current employee. The sheriff’s office said that the leaked information included names, home addresses and Social Security numbers.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office said it learned of the breach on April 22. Officials said the breach appeared to be an intentional act and “not the result of a failure of our digital or cybersecurity safeguards.”

A spokesperson for Sheriff Donna D. Buckley’s office said that the information was sent to the employee’s personal, non-BCSO email account. The email contained “a spreadsheet with the names, home addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of one current and over 100 former [BCSO] employees,” the sheriff’s office reported.
