Hackers hit Minot water treatment plant server in ransomware case, FBI investigating
Hackers got into the Minot water treatment plant computer system earlier this month, but city officials stressed the water stayed safe and the plant never stopped operating.
City Manager Tom Joyce said staff discovered a ransomware note on a server at the water treatment plant the morning of March 14. The note said the sender had gained access to the system and suggested the city “tighten up your firewalls,” but did not identify who was behind it or name a specific dollar amount.
“It generally said, you might want to tighten up your firewalls,” Joyce said. He added that the city never replied. “We never communicated with the sender of the ransomware note. They’ve never communicated back to us.”
