White House memo claims Alibaba has China military ties, FT says
A White House national security memo claims Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. provided the Chinese military with technology support against targets in the U.S., the Financial Times reported, raising concerns about the e-commerce giant’s links to the People’s Liberation Army as it steps up efforts to compete globally in artificial intelligence.
The memo says the Chinese company has provided the PLA with what the White House believes to be capabilities threatening US security, according to the FT report.
The memo didn’t provide details on what the Chinese military was allegedly targeting in the U.S., the report said. It claimed Alibaba also supplied the China government and military with access to customer data including internet-protocol addresses, WiFi information, payment records and AI-related services, according to the report.
