Wave of wine-inspired phishing attacks targets EU diplomats

The formidable Russia-backed threat group APT29 is behind a fresh wave of phishing attacks on European diplomats that once again aims to take advantage of their cultural persuasion for enjoying wine to deliver a new backdoor malware.

In what appears to be a continuation of last year’s WineLoader campaign, the new attack is similar in that it uses email to invite targets to wine-tasting events in an attempt to lure them to click on malicious links, researchers from Check Point Research revealed in a report.  However, two things are different this time: the target audience and the malware waiting on the back end of the campaign.
